Willy and Poh Ling enjoy taking an unconventional approach to things. It’s no surprise then that Willy is the founder and boss of a wildly successful design agency that thrives on non-conformist ideas. He fondly recalls that he started as Employee Number One and now counts 25 employees and multi-national giants such as Sony and Holiday Inn amongst his clients. Poh Ling on the other hand paired a modern bridal veil with a shimmering cheongsam from Lai Chan for a different take on the usual wedding ensemble.
Wedding date: Saturday, 1 August 2009
Venue: Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Solemniser: Reverend Father Henry Siew
Cheongsam: Lai Chan, Raffles Hotel
Lunch: Flutes at the Fort, Fort Canning Park
Poh Ling’s dog is a lot smaller than she appears here. She does bite!

A bright and cheery start for the makeup session.

Poh Ling’s gorgeous cheongsam from Lai Chan.

Poh Ling couldn’t help but grin…

…while her little sister looks on in awe and envy.

And it’s off to church in an unconventional sedan, a Japanese Mitsuoka car with faux retro styling.

Joy!

Father Henry Siew addresses the wedding congregation.

Here’s Willy’s uncle from Australia. He married Willy’s aunt and he used to be a wedding photographer in his younger days.

Poh Ling saves the biggest hug for her best friend.

I chanced upon this artistic shot when Poh Ling’s veil blended with the rest of the church’s white facade outside.

Both Willy and Poh Ling swear by their Blackberries to manage their hectic and sometimes 24/7 careers. Here Willy transcribes his wedding speech that he composed on his Blackberry.

Fort Canning provides a shady respite from the midday sun. It’s hard to believe that you’re only metres away from Coleman Street. It’s another world on the Hill.

Willy and Poh Ling do a visual check on their wedding guests before their march in.

One must never get in the way of two determined bridesmaids during the bouquet toss.

We had a well-deserved break behind the restaurant after an almost 10-hour non-stop wedding schedule. I really do enjoy day weddings as you get to finish in the late afternoon unlike the usual midnight finishes for wedding banquets.

I bet Willy’s thinking of the nice, hot soak in the Conrad hotel bath that awaits him.

Congratulations Willy & Poh Ling and, as Willy likes to tell his new hires, “May the Force be with you”.

Hey yushan! Nothing ventured nothing gain : ). I love photography too.
Hi Suzy. Thanks for your nice words. I try to update my site every two weeks or so. It depends on my workload!
Hey suzy here again. Your work just gets better and better. Makes me want to have my wedding right now! how often do you update your blog? I always look forward to your next couple.
Thank you Pinkaboo. I’m honoured to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jules Bianchi. I checked out her web site and she’s certainly a very talented and enterprising photographer. Her cafe-shop in San Francisco is a brilliant idea. I wonder if it will work in Singapore? Bridal cafe anyone?
Thank you for taking such heartfelt photos. You remind me of Jules Bianchi.
Hi Jay, thanks for dropping by my blog. Yes, I take a hands-off approach to wedding photography and I like to let my subjects “breathe” rather than to direct them to do this or do that. I’m not a fan of posing as you can see. Natural, spontaneous photography is my strength. It takes a lot of effort to anticipate what people are going to do next but the results are worth it as you can see.
Nice pix! I’m from the States and you have this knack of getting the right shot every time. I also like how you treat your subjects with sensitivity and respect. You’re bookmarked.
The best pic evah is the one with Willy & the baby.
So cute!
Thanks for your nice comments. I find that most of the photos that make me or you go WOW are those that happen on the spur of the moment or by pure chance (and lots of luck!). That’s why I love real-time wedding photography so much. There’s no posing and you never know what you’ll get the next minute. It’s exhausting work but I know I’ve done well when I start smiling during the photo sorting process
Fantastic wedding photo. Well taken and it capture both the Bride and Bridgegroom for the day! Fantastic!
the bride looks very elegant here, like a ballerina. i love the pic of the red dress with the cross, and also the pic of her profile with her veil blending in with the church facade
