Kailing did something that no other bride had done before. She gave me a personal gift after her wedding. “Hey, no need,” I protested, “I’m just doing my job.”

“I want to thank everyone who had a part in our wedding,” she said. With that kind of attention to detail and gratefulness, you could see she was head-over-heels-and-happy-crazy finally getting hitched to her handsome beau, James.

Congratulations James and Kailing. And thank you for the thoughtful gift.

KURT and Sandelyn’s wedding was celebrated in genteel style at the renovated Burkill Hall, Botanic Gardens. It was a nice reunion for me after her sister’s wedding, Fiona, back in November 2010. And it was a pleasure seeing everyone’s faces again, but in different roles of course!

SPORTS run in the veins of Duncan and Jennifer who both stand well a head and half above me. They first met in a London gym when he let out a resounding “OI!” across the room after recognising Jennifer from his old gym in Melbourne. Several continents and cricket matches later they tied the knot in genteel style in Old Parliament House and then hosted a dinner and dance well into midnight at the Singapore Cricket Club.

AND now let the posts of 2011 couples begin. There’s plenty to look forward to this year. Lots of diversity and couples from around the region and the world. All this makes for unique and original weddings that I’ve attended in the past six months.

Ernest and Elise showed tremendous enthusiasm for their pre-wedding shoot. Their custom wedding bands weren’t ready yet but that didn’t stop them from borrowing a pair from the jewellers. And they must have spent countless hours shopping for the right outfits.

Here are some highlights from their whimsical, sunny afternoon with me.

SHAWN and Nita gave me complete creative licence and freedom with their pre-wedding shoot. So I took the chance to pick up a few goodies in Melbourne for them including the Battenburg lace parasol you see above.

I know similar ones can be found in Singapore’s Chinatown but the quality and sizes are completely different. Plus the sight of an eager Chinese guy snapping up fine lacy things in Australian bridal shops must have raised a few eyebrows!

They booked me for their pre-wedding and actual day with two main conditions:

1. They wanted something different.
2. No cheesy or corny poses, please.

I gladly accepted their challenge.

For 2010 doctor and lawyer brides were running neck and neck for second place in the most popular occupation for my brides. The overall winner, of course, were teachers by an overwhelming majority. For 2011 it’s a toss up between doctors and lawyers for now with banker brides running a close second. May the best bride win.

BACK in 1999 if you had told Roger and Jasmine, then good friends in junior college, that they were destined to marry in a decade they would have laughed and slapped you across the head. Well, it turned out that feelings matured and became mutual after Jasmine returned from medical school overseas and Roger entered the workforce as an ernest young man.

It still fascinates me how two disparate adults meet, fall in love and then marry. So, in our first meeting, don’t be shy if I ask you how both of you met.

THE air crackled with wit and humour when I met Louis and S.Y. for the first time in Holland Village. We hit off immediately and this was an excellent sign. A working relationship of mutual trust and admiration bodes well for your wedding photographs.

They are possibly Singapore’s brainiest couple — well, for 2010 at least. They coincidently have the same degree, masters and PhD. If you know anything about the inhibitors of receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling then you will know what I mean.

S.Y. has an incredible talent for handicrafts and she took the concept of a do-it-yourself-wedding to another level.
She made her own bouquet, corsages and hong bao box you see here. Yes, that’s a box and not a cake.

Sensual. Suave.

The wait staff deserve credit here. Someone actually approached a lone photographer sitting in a dark corner having a hurried dinner and sincerely asked (a) how was the food, and (b) whether I would like a drink. Now that’s great service.
Kudos to the management and staff at Villa Halia for being a standard bearer of excellence.

FIONA had all of 45 minutes of sleep the night before her wedding. Rico did slightly better with 1 hour’s worth. But fatigue was definitely not on their faces when these dynamos tore through their wedding day with a photoshoot in the early morning, the church ceremony, another photoshoot in the afternoon, tea ceremony and then finally dinner.

DENNIS and Sara are getting married this Saturday. These young lovebirds now call Perth, Australia, their home and they’re building their dream house right this minute (not them, they engaged builders of course).
